Headteacher Update Podcast: Keeping children safe: Effective safeguarding in schools (part 2)

Written by: Pete Henshaw | Published:

In the second part of this episode, we speak to three colleagues in primary schools about their safeguarding work, examples of best practice, and useful ideas. We ask how schools can ensure that a culture of “it could happen here” permeates all of their safeguarding work

This two-part episode offers advice and tips for good safeguarding practice and how we can work to keep children safe.

In part two, we speak to three colleagues working in primary schools to find out about their safeguarding work, including examples of best practice and useful ideas. They discuss the trends they are seeing, effective safeguarding principles, and how we can ensure a culture of “it could happen here”.

Topics include SEND, the impact of Covid and lessons learnt, spotting the patterns of safeguarding issues, effective communication with staff, empowering staff to question narratives, and supporting peripatetic and volunteer staff.

Other themes include peer-on-peer abuse, online safety, attendance, domestic abuse, referring to social care, including meeting thresholds, and advice on how to make referrals successfully.

As ever, our host is semi-retired primary headteacher and National Leader of Education Helen Frostick and our guests are:

  • Elizabeth Harrison, deputy CEO of The Kemnal Academy Trust, which has 45 schools in the South and East of England.
  • Sara Alston, a practising SENCO and independent SEND and safeguarding consultant and trainer with more than 35 years teaching experience.
  • Dermot Bracken, headteacher and designated safeguarding lead at Marshgate Primary School in south London.

And you can still listen to part one of this episode in which we spoke to Headteacher Update’s safeguarding expert Elizabeth Rose about current safeguarding trends and how to respond, general best practice, referrals, online safety and more. Listen via https://bit.ly/htu-podcastsafe
