Activity ideas: The Royal Shakespeare Company is offering a range of family activity and craft ideas for use during lockdown

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has launched a number of resources to support students learning from home during the lockdown.

This includes a series of free toolkits with 15-minute activities for parents and pupils to try out. There are also family and craft activities available on the RSC website.

Meanwhile, its “homework help” initiative, in which actors and RSC alumni respond to students’ emailed questions, is also being extended into the summer term.

Other resources include:

  • The RSC Shakespeare Learning Zone has games, videos, timelines, character, and plot summaries.
  • The RSC’s Live Lessons on Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet are available anytime. There are also a number of primary and secondary lessons co-produced by the RSC and the BBC that can be watched at any time.
  • The RSC’s YouTube channel contains a selection of educational videos including introductions to language terms and actor-led tutorials.
  • Teacher resources are free to download including teacher packs by play and key stage.

The #RSCHomeworkHelp initiative has already received hundreds of questions from young people studying Shakespeare in the UK and around the world.

RSC actors and alumni have been helping to answer the questions including RSC associate artist, David Tennant. The actors, who are currently unable to rehearse or perform, have volunteered to share their tips and answer questions about Shakespeare and drama studies while under lockdown.

Due to the success of the initiative, #RSCHomeworkHelp will continue into the summer term and new questions can be sent from June either by email to or via Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #RSCHomeworkHelp.

The actors will then respond to the students’ questions through a mixture of written and video responses which will all shared on the RSC website.
