There is a larger attainment gap for pupils with SEND than for any other group. In 2016, 14 per cent of SEND pupils achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at age 11, compared to 53 per cent of their peers.
Pupils with SEND are twice as likely to come from disadvantaged homes, too (27 per cent compared to 12 per cent). The funding aims to test “promising” and “evidence-informed” projects.
These might include whole-school programmes to create inclusive cultures or targeted interventions for particular needs. The EEF also wants to fund pilots of interventions in special schools. Grant applications can be made until January 14.
