The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom is bringing together a consortium of outdoor learning organisations to help support schools if and when they re-open from June 1.

Under current government plans, primary schools are to be asked to re-open for pupils in Reception, year 1 and year 6 from June 1.

Current Department for Education (DfE) guidance on protective measures that schools can take recommends adjusting timetables to decrease the movement of pupils around the school and considering how outdoor space can be used as much as possible for lessons and exercise.

The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom has approached the DfE with an offer of support for schools.

Its consortium features a wide range of organisations, including Learning through Landscapes, the Outdoor Council, the Scouts, and Girl Guiding UK.

The council says the consortium can offer schools access to quality-assured resources and CPD to help them “develop, deliver and evaluate their own programmes of learning beyond the classroom, whether at school or at home”.

Currently, schools can access information on planning and delivery, resources and activity ideas on the council’s website. Soon to be added will be a list of contacts which schools can approach if they would like specific support or advice.

Dr Anne Hunt, chief executive of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, said: “Children and young people are dealing with high levels of disruption, uncertainty and a lack of physical connection with their friends and with the natural world and the inequalities are widening.

"There are few so well-evidenced interventions that offer – with almost universal availability and at very low cost – the immediate opportunity to make such a big difference to so many children and young people. With government encouraging time outdoors as part of our recovery strategies, now is the time to take learning outside the classroom.’’
