This two-part episode offers advice and tips for good safeguarding practice and how we can work to keep children safe. Part one features Headteacher Update’s resident safeguarding expert Elizabeth Rose, including advice on latest trends, best practice, online safety and making referrals

In part one, Headteacher Update’s resident safeguarding expert Elizabeth Rose speaks to us about the current safeguarding trends she is seeing and how schools can respond, as well as general best practice advice.

Themes include the consequences of Covid-19 for safeguarding practice and the safety of children outside school.

We discuss the growing trend of online safety challenges in primary safeguarding including peer-on-peer incidents among younger children, social media, cyber-bullying, online abuse & self-generated images, and online gaming platforms.

Elizabeth offers tips for making successful referrals to children’s social care (CAMHS), applying thresholds of need and timely information-sharing.

Other topics include Early Help and parental communication, how we can use pupil voice as part of safeguarding, how we can best support all staff with safeguarding issues, and effective staff training.

The episode is hosted by semi-retired primary headteacher and National Leader of Education Helen Frostick. Elizabeth Rose is an independent safeguarding consultant and the director of So Safeguarding. She has worked in education for more than 15 years and is a former secondary designated safeguarding lead and local authority safeguarding in education advisor.
