The videos also encourage pupils to think “what will you do?” – introducing them to ways they can get involved with UK Parliament, for example by contacting their local MP about an issue that is important to them.
The videos touch upon the difference between Parliament and government, what happens in the House of Commons and House of Lords Chambers, what democracy means, the role of an MP and member of the House of Lords, what happens during a general election, how laws are made, and the role of the monarch in granting Royal Assent.
The videos can also accompanyParliament’s free one-hour online education workshops, in which schools can receive a private workshop with Parliament’s education team. Slots are open now until July.
Elsewhere, schools are also invited to get involved in UK Parliament Week, which this year runs from November 1 to 7. Activities that schools can run during the week include campaigns, petitions and debates, school council elections, themed assemblies, and virtual chats with MPs and other politicians.
Other learning opportunities include free e-learning modules for teachers and the chance for your class to have a session with the Speaker of the House of Commons or a member of the House of Lords.
