With behaviour such an important element in overall school development, this book should be essential reading. It aims to “give the tools to influence behaviour in the classroom so that it is outstanding".
The first tool is a comprehensive “self-evaluation" grid which looks in tremendous detail about what is already known in terms of behaviour management. This could be a great starting point for a whole-school staff trying to come to terms with the Ofsted distinction between “good" and “outstanding" behaviour.
Readers will find this book empowering and throughout it makes reference to responsibility and ownership for managing behaviours. Anecdotal examples of behaviour management issues are given throughout, and there is a real emphasis on reflection over a wealth of ideas and solutions. At all times the clear message is about continuity and a whole-team approach to systems.
As each chapter concludes there is another opportunity for the reader to again reflect on the relevant sections of the self-evaluation grid completed previously.This is a hugely enjoyable and accessible book. It is perhaps primarily aimed at more challenging school environments, although its practical nature makes it wholly relevant to any school setting.
