School Diversity Week 2021: LGBT+ inclusive teaching resources

A free toolkit of LGBT+ inclusive teaching resources, covering all key stages and curriculum areas, has been published.

It has been put together by Just Like Us, a LGBT+ young people’s charity, and is available for all teachers and schools who sign up to take part in School Diversity Week 2021.

School Diversity Week is the charity’s annual celebration of LGBT+ equality in education and this year takes place from June 21 to 25.

The online toolkit contains teaching resources including lesson plans for all key stages, across the curriculum subjects, as well as posters, assemblies, book recommendations and “inspiring ways to make learning LGBT+ inclusive”.

Examples of resources in the toolkit include “Different Families” for early years education, “Alan Turing: His life and achievements” for key stage 2 ICT, “My Family” in three different languages for key stage 3, “Religion and being LGBT+” for key stage 4, and “Queer Eye and Probability” for key stage 4 maths.

The online toolkit also contains resources developed in partnership with Elmer (Elmer’s Fortune Teller for key stage 1 and 2 design and technology) and Twinkl (Grow Your Own Rainbow for key stage 1 science).

Dominic Arnall, chief executive of Just Like Us, says: “It has been an incredibly challenging year, for teachers and school staff as well as LGBT+ young people who have disproportionately struggled with mental health, and that’s why we’ve focused on ensuring that educators have easy access to all the inclusive resources they need to celebrate School Diversity Week in this free toolkit.

“By taking part in School Diversity Week, educators can send a positive message to their pupils that being LGBT+ is accepted at their school or college.”
