Diary of a Headteacher: Facing academy conversion

As a long-standing headteacher of an outstanding school, Tom Donohoe is anxious at the prospect of forced academy conversion under new government White Paper proposals

As I write this, it is coming to the end of the end-of-term holidays and I am sitting in a coffee shop in Gunwharf Quays (other Retail Villages are available!) waiting for the stores to open so that I can choose my beautiful, and long-suffering, wife an appropriate anniversary gift.

Nothing unusual about that. However, I have been here for two hours already as I am wading my way through Educational Excellence Everywhere, the government’s White Paper outlining their future vision for education.

There is no doubt that this document outlines the most radical and significant set of changes in the 30 years I have been involved in education. There are elements within the paper that are at best challenging and at worst terrifying! You cannot argue with the title of the document, but it is within the detail of the paper that I begin to struggle.
