Countryside Classroom: Non-tech activity and learning ideas

The Countryside Classroom is offering a range of ideas to help develop children’s skills away from technology during remote learning.

The charity’s Home Education Hub offers activity ideas, materials and resources aimed at both parents and teachers and linked to food, farming and the natural environment.

The hub caters for all ages and the ideas are curriculum-linked. There is also a Countryside Classroom weekly blog, which focuses on a different subject each week and gives ideas and advice.

The hub offers access to LEAF Education’s education booklets as well, which tackle topics such as STEM, maths in the garden, playing with your food and storytelling.

Among the booklets on offer, there is one offering quick activities, which has been redesigned for home educators and which contains some swift activities ranging from a variety of card games to creating an easy bird feeder.

A core aim of the resources and activities is to help families develop their children’s skills and knowledge away from the screen. Many of the ideas will allow families to make use of outdoor or garden spaces.

Carl Edwards, director of LEAF Education, said: “Countryside Classroom offers resources for the more traditional subjects, as well as exciting and engaging materials to help children learn about where their food comes from and the natural world around them – even if at this difficult time, when access to the outdoors is limited. The resources also help parents bring to life how vital food, farming and nature is for our health and wellbeing, which has never been so important as now.”
