Entitled Watch Out! Helping to make good viewing choices, it has been created by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and features lesson plans and resources. It comes after the BBFC’s similar 2018 resource for key stage 2 pupils.
The new key stage 1 resource has been given the PSHE Association Quality Mark and also meets the statutory guidance for relationships and health education.
The lesson plans teach pupils about how to make safe viewing choices and help them understand what they can do if they see something that is not age-appropriate. The lessons also consider how age-ratings can help us make choices about what to watch, how to make good viewing choices that are right for a person’s age, and what to do if someone watches something that makes them feel upset or worried.
To celebrate the new resource, the BBFC has also launched a “Symbol Superheroes” competition. To enter, teachers need to complete the Age-rating Superhero! activity in lesson one of the resource, asking their class to draw their very own superhero from the BBFC U and PG age rating symbols.
Teachers can submit their class’s entries by the deadline on June 25. The creator of the best superhero will win their school £200 worth of film-making equipment, and will win a personalised BBFC Black Card, a goody bag and cinema voucher.
