At the Association of School and College Leaders annual conference, general secretary Pepe Di’lasio described a conundrum that headteachers have faced since 2013.

How do you develop and maintain the relationships and trust with your families that is essential to successful outcomes for their children, when you are also being asked to issue fines if they take their children out of school during term-time?

Mr Di’lasio spoke about the growing tension between families and schools in a post-pandemic environment where attendance has become “optional” in the mindset of a number of our parents.

During its annual conference, ASCL published the results of a survey of 9,127 school leaders and teachers (including 3,330 primary) showing reasons for pupil absence this academic year. The results reveal a situation that has worsened year-on-year:
