Careers: What next after your first headship?

With headteachers getting increasingly younger in age, many more could well find themselves looking for new challenges after a successful first headship. So what are your options? Suzanne O’Connell takes a look

Headteachers are getting younger. Government data shows that in 2010 half of heads were aged 51 or under. In 2020, this had fallen to 48 and under, with the lowest quartile of headteachers aged 43 and under (DfE, 2022).

However, if you were appointed to a headship role in your 40s – or even in your 30s – are you really intending to stick around in the same school for another 20 years or more?

It is likely that the changing demographics will mean that many more headteachers will be looking for new challenges earlier in their careers than previously. So what will you move on to when the time is right? What options are there for after a first headship?
