Headteacher Update Podcast: Effective SEND practice

In this episode, we look at the principles of effective SEND practice, teaching and support in the primary school, touching upon leadership, teaching strategies, family engagement, pupil profiles, and creating a culture of inclusion

We discuss effective leadership of SEN, how you can champion SEN in your school, communicate effectively with colleagues and achieve consistency across your school.

We consider how we can ensure SEN is the responsibility of all school staff and not just the SENCO – how we can create a culture of inclusion.

We also ask how schools can maximise outcomes for SEN pupils given the funding and other challenges we face.

The discussion touches upon specific teaching strategies, parent/carer engagement, as well as using pupil profiles to support teaching staff with Education, Health and Care Plans.

We also discuss the impact of Covid in SEN students and the problem of a culture driven by interventions rather than quality first teaching.

Hosted by National Leader of Education Helen Frostick, our guests for this discussion are:

  • Daniel Sobel, the founder of Inclusion Expert which provides SEND, Pupil Premium and looked-after children reviews, training and support.
  • Emmanuel Awoyelu an assistant headteacher with many years of SENCO experience.
  • Angela Pitcher, school improvement advisor and a former headteacher with expertise in SEND and dyslexia.
