Be Food Smart campaign offers resources for schools

As part of its Change4Life initiative, Public Health England has launched its new Be Food Smart campaign offering a range of free resources for primary schools.

The campaign is based around figures showing that pupils consume half of their daily recommended sugar allowance before the school day begins – including almost three sugar cubes at breakfast time alone. By the end of the day, children consume more than three times their recommended allowance of sugar.

Furthermore, more than a fifth of four and five-year-olds and more than a third of 10 to 11-year-olds are overweight or obese.

In January, Public Health England is sending out more than 16,500 Be Food Smart packs to primary schools, as well as a number of parent packs. They offer curriculum-linked resources focused on healthy food and linked to subjects including English, maths, science, and PSHE.

There are teacher’s guides for both key stages 1 and 2, assembly resources and whole-school teaching ideas. A new Be Food Smart app has also been developed to highlight just how much sugar, saturated fat and salt can be found in everyday food and drink.
