Environmentally friendly, energy-efficient classrooms: Timber-frame classrooms are constructed using timber posts and beams, completed with external cladding. As well as being 100 per cent renewable, timber stores C02 from the atmosphere, according to Forestry Commission research (Thompson & Matthews, 1989). To keep buildings “green” over the long term, insulation is crucial. Timber has fantastic natural thermal insulation properties, reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems.
Valuable, additional teaching space: Timber classrooms provide extra space quickly and easily. Constructed off site and erected on site (within a matter of days or weeks), they are delivered much quicker than those constructed by other methods. Since they are standalone, they can be placed anywhere – a much-valued “break” from the main building, as well as a clever use of space. With their natural aesthetic, they blend seamlessly into the surroundings.
