The unveiling of a nationwide network of 122 music education hubs marks a “significant shift" in the way music education is delivered.

The hubs will cater for children aged five to 18 and are intended to bring together schools, professional music organisations, higher and further education and others to create “joined-up music education provision" for young people.

Last year, the government cut funding for music services from £82.5 million to £58 million with much of this funding allocated to the establishment of the area-wide music hubs.

The hubs will be in place from August in order to deliver activity from September and the plan means that the majority of children who learn instruments in school will do so through the hubs.

Arts Council England has been auditing applications to run the hubs, which are charged with ensuring that every child has the opportunity to sing and learn a musical instrument and play with other children as part of an ensemble or choir.

A statement this week said: “The new music education hubs will see a significant shift in the way music education has been delivered to date, both in and out of school.

“Some applications were stronger than others. A number of hubs will be asked to develop their plans further in the coming months. Over the next three years Arts Council England expects to see hubs continue to evolve, develop and improve."

Among the successful applications, nine Greater Manchester authorities have established a partnership with the award-winning Halle Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Northern College of Music along others, while the Devon Music Service plans to work across the county's 29 coastal and market towns and has gathered 53 partners from the arts and education sectors.

Alan Davey, chief executive of Arts Council England, said: “After a robust application process we look forward to working with music education hubs to enhance and develop music education provision across the country. We look forward to seeing the music education hubs become a part of the cultural education offered to children and young people at a local level, and a part of the wider cultural landscape."
